Minutes of LISA Meetings

September 4, 1998

No agenda was announced.

OPENING:

Ann Seidl introduced the new LISA officers:

President:                              Rochelle Logan
Vice President/President Elect:         Martin Garnar
Secretary:                              Stacey Nagle
Treasurer:                              Jean Heilig
Program Coordinator:                    Marcy Rodney

Each of the new officers gave a brief word.  Ann thanked everyone who ran for office and congratulated the winners.

CLA CONFERENCE

Will be held October 15-18, 1998, at Colorado Springs.  There will be the pre-conferences, conferences, lunches, dinners, and good opportunities for networking.  Such interesting and influential people as Michael Gorman, Will Manley, and Ann Symons will be speaking.

There will be a LISV program update by Lynn Silipigni-Connaway on Sunday afternoon followed by presentations of current research by students in the program.  There will also be a LISV booth set up by Vince Plymell of University College's ecruitment office.

ANN SYMONS DINNER: the incoming ALA president, will be at the DU sponsored dinner Sunday night at the Broadmoor Hotel for the LISV program.  SLA will be sponsoring some students for free attendance to this dinner.

Roger brought up a discussion of possibly opening a chapter of Beta Phi Mu for the LISV program.  Beta Phi Mu is a national honorary academic society associated with MLS graduates who maintain a GPA of 3.7 or higher.  The dinner at the Broadmoor will probably generate some interest in the Beta Phi Mu program.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS:  Ann Seidl and Deb Pruitt mentioned that any student in the LISV program willing to volunteer to work at the CLA registration booth for a four hour period would be given free admission to the conference.  Deb Pruitt will be coordinating the student volunteers through BCR.

For further information about the conference go to CLA's web site at : <http://www.cla-web.org>.

CLA - FINAL THOUGHTS:  Remember to check the notes on the student discussion forum at the LISA web site <http://www.du.edu/lisa>, about carpooling and/or sharing accomodations for the conference.  Also, remember to request "conference rates" when making reservations at the Doubletree for this event.

FALL QUARTER TEA

September 14, 1998, from 4-6 p.m. near Special Collections in the basement of Penrose Library.  Sponsored by Deb Grealy and Steve Fisher of Penrose Library to start off the 4th year of the LISV program.  Deb Grealy would like a ballpark number of how many plan to attend.

STUDENT RECEPTION

On October 16, 1998, at 4:30 p.m., there will be a student reception at the Buchtel Bungalow for students to meet and talk with Ann O'Neil from the ALA committee on accreditation.  She will be particularly interested in hearing students opinions about the program.  Although this is scheduled at the same time as CLA, all students are encouraged to attend this reception.  It's very important for the students to be heard.

INDEPENDENT CAPSTONE PROJECT (4 credit hour course)

Keith Lance will be overseeing the capstone project in the Spring quarter.

PRACTICUM

Deb Grealy mentioned that the board is looking at restructuring the practicum program in the future.

6:40 p.m. - the meeting ended.
