Living & Learning Communities

What We Do

Students come to the Social Justice LLC with a wide variety of interest areas. Staff and faculty work with you to address those issues in deep and meaningful ways. Topics such as homelessness and poverty, the education system in the U.S., immigration, GLBTQ rights, and health care are some of the areas about which students are passionate.

You will go on a personal journey, learning about yourself and developing your identity before you start addressing any of these issues. You will learn about issues of power, privilege and oppression, and how you can actively engage with your own community, the Denver community, and beyond.

A snapshot of specific events and activities you take part in as part of the SJC:

  • You'll go on two overnight retreats throughout the year. One in the fall to the Balarat Outdoor Education Center, where you'll participate in a ropes course and other team-building activities. The spring retreat combines a group community service project and time in Grand Lake, hiking and exploring this quaint mountain town.
  • You will serve a minimum of 40 hours in the community throughout the year, engaging with organizations and people committed to bringing about positive social change.
  • You will meet 2nd, 3rd and 4th year members of the LLC through dinners, events, and service projects in the community.
  • You will have many chances to get involved with different student groups and organizations on campus. Some of these include:
    • the [dis]claimer- an alternative campus newspaper which was started by SJC students in 2002
    • the Engaged Community Initiative (ECI)
    • Queer Straight Alliance (QSA)
    • Student Senate (AUSA)
    • Black Student Alliance (BSA)
    • the Latino Student Alliance (LSA)
