Update on DU Campus Alert

May 7, 2015—At approximately 3 p.m. today, the Department of Campus Safety at the University of Denver received information on a threat to the community. A campus-wide alert was sent to faculty, staff, and students regarding the situation and telling anyone on campus to remain indoors.  The initial report came in regarding a male entering the Ritchie Center carrying an assault rifle. This is believed to have been a computerized call, but is still being investigated by Denver Police. The second report came in regarding a male near the Newman Center carrying a handgun. This was a call made by a member of the DU community. Both areas were searched by Denver Police and cleared. The following is the timeline of events:  

May 7, 2015 at 3:11p.m.

We have received reports of a suspicious person on the DU campus who may be threatening the DU community. If you are outside, please seek safety in the nearest building immediately. If you are inside, please do not leave the building until Campus Safety issues an ALL CLEAR message or additional instructions. If you are not in the Ritchie Center seek safety in the nearest building. Your Pioneer Card must now be used to gain entry through all card access doors.

May 7, 2015 at 3:20 p.m.

The Department of Campus Safety received reports of a male wearing a black jacket entering the Ritchie Center carrying an assault rifle. If you are in the Ritchie Center, lock down. If you are not in the Ritchie Center seek safety in the nearest building.

May 7, 2015 at 4:10 p.m.

May 7, 2015 at 4:25 p.m.

New report of a 30 year old white male wearing a red jacket and carrying a handgun near the Newman Center.

May 7, 2015 at 4:32 p.m.

Some media are reporting possible gunman on campus is a hoax. This is unconfirmed. Remain indoors and locked down.  Denver Police are searching both the Ritchie Center and the Newman Center.

Lockdown has been lifted. We will follow up with more information.

Both the Ritchie Center and the Newman Center have been searched and Denver Police confirms no suspects have been found.  Stay tuned for continuing updates.
