Diavolo : : Director's Choice : :
|
Diavolo was founded by Jacques Heim to create large-scale interdisciplinary performances which examine the funny and frightening ways individuals interact with their environment. Constantly changing the image presented to the audience, Diavolo has developed a movement vocabulary that creates an almost cinematic experience of powerful images that develop abstract narratives of the human condition. The sets created are sometimes outrageous and surrealistic and form an intrinsic part of each piece.
Tonight’s performance will include Foreign Bodies. The work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Esa Pekka Salonen, Music Director, co-commissioned with additional support from The Carpenter Performing Arts Center, Cal-State Long Beach, CA and the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, University of Denver.

Andrew Manze, Violin & Richard Egarr, Fortepiano : : Director's Choice : :
|
Andrew Manze has been described as “the first modern superstar of the baroque violin,” (San Francisco Examiner). He brings a rare flamboyance to the violin repertoire and is a performer with a highly developed spirit of adventure.
Richard Egarr has worked with all types of keyboards ranging from the 15th-century organ to the fortepiano, harpsichord and modern piano. He is director of The Academy of the Begijnhof, Amsterdam, and is in great demand both as soloist and as accompanist for many of today’s finest artists.
Together, Manze and Eggar will re-create an evening of Mozart and Schubert as you would have heard it in a 19th century home, using a period violin and fortepiano, forerunner of today’s grand piano. Mr. Eggar will play a Zuckermann fortepiano, modeled after the Stein-Dulcken fortepiano at The Smithsonian Institution, lent by Alfred Born.

Tapestry - “In the Company of Angels” : : Director's Choice : :
|
The trademark of Boston, an a cappella ensemble of four women (plus instrumental guests) is combining medieval repertory and contemporary compositions in bold conceptual programming. The ensemble made its debut in 1995, with a performance which The Boston Globe deemed “a knockout,” and critics have since hailed the ensemble’s rich distinctive voices, technically spot-on singing and emotionally charged performances.
Tapestry’s holiday offering explores the lush Renaissance harmonies of Boston composer Patricia Van Ness and 16th-century Spanish composers, spiced with lively folk songs and dances. The program includes selections from Tapestry’s award-winning CD Sapphire Night.

Capitol Steps Season Extra
7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Gates Concert Hall
|
Twenty-five years ago, Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and institutions that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
Since they began, Capitol Steps have recorded 26 albums. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide. By this point in the primary campaign season, we’ll all need the laughs!

Rik Reppe, "Glorious Noise" : : Director's Choice : :
|
Who on earth is Rik Reppe? After years as a performing artist, singer and songwriter, Reppe developed a severe allergy to poverty. He returned to school and earned a PhD in economics. He spent time as a lobbyist, started his own dot-com business, which died an ignominious death, and became a successful management consultant. After the 9/11 attacks, he began to think there might be more to the whole idea of being an American than the relentless pursuit of wealth and conspicuous consumption. With his sleeping bag, tent and pickup truck, he spent months on the road, reacquainting himself with the country. That trip gave birth to his hit one-man show, Staggering Toward America, about the nature and meaning of home.
In his latest theatrical creation, Glorious Noise, accompanied by a piano player, Reppe explores the stories and music of the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Revealing the love, life and loss of the Crescent City in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the stories he tells and the songs he sings reveal a people and a place intent on surviving. A top-seller of the 2005 Minnesota Fringe Festival, Glorious Noise captures the hopeful spirit of a devastated city.
