New Research: Couples are not seeking the help they need

Relationship Education Workshops gaining popularity

New research at the University of Denver shows that in general, couples do not seek relationship counseling when they are having problems. However, the study shows that    couples are more willing to attend workshops and retreats to get the help they need.

“Workshops do not replace therapy, but are a great starting point for many couples and there are many workshop options now available in the Denver Metro Area,” says DU professor of psychology Howard Markman. “In fact, educational workshops that teach communication, conflict resolution and stress management skills to help couples are part of a new revolution in services for couples that is taking place around the country.”

The new research shows that men especially feel less threatened by workshops. “Workshops are easier to attend and men tend to feel more comfortable learning skills than going to ‘therapy,’” says Markman.

Markman and psychology professor Martha Wadsworth, was awarded a $1.8 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to study the effects of workshops on relationships and children.

The study will pay $320 to couples who are raising children together and who have financial difficulties to participate in the study. Participants need to be available for three consecutive Saturdays beginning Feb. 23.  For eligibility requirements, please visit http://www.du.edu/psychology/frame/index.htm.
