DU students receive USA Today national recognition
Sixth consecutive year DU student recognized in “Academic Team”
University of Denver student Alex Ruehle was honored as a member of the USA Today 2007 All-USA College Academic Second Team and Jordan DeHerrera was given Honorable Mention recognition. This marks the sixth consecutive year that DU students have been named to one of the USA Today All-USA College Academic Teams. Ruehle and DeHerrera were the only Colorado students honored from a field of 600 applicants.
The All-USA College Academic Team honors full-time undergraduates who excel in both scholarship and community service.
Ruehle will graduate in June with an undergraduate degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and a master of business administration. During his time at DU, Ruehle has served as a biology teaching assistant, a DU Athletics tutor, a member of the Executive Mentor program, a facilitator for the DU Clearness Committee and was the founder of the DU Society of Road Scholars, a travel and service group. He is a Boettcher Foundation Scholar, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and has received the Honors Program Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Achievement Award, and a Community Scholars Grant to volunteer at a medical clinic in Guatemala. He has done research on placental cells in Chile and work on the effects of PDE-5 inhibitors on the central nervous system toxicity at Duke Medical Center.
DeHerrera will graduate in June 2009 with an undergraduate degree in economics, a master of business administration and a master of accounting degree. He is the founder of Students Engaged in Social Entrepreneurship, an international service-learning trip to Juarez, Mexico, and is involved with University of Denver’s Rotaract chapter, Delta Sigma Pi, Greek Leaders Against Sexual Assault, Campus Crusade, and the DU Programs board. In October 2007, he was the only college student selected to attend the Denver Metro Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Exchange trip. He is a Boettcher Scholar and has received the Rotary International Honorary Rotarian award and the Rotary International Golden Ruler Award.
“Alex and Jordan are two remarkable students who have managed to accumulate longer and more meaningful resumes at DU than most of us achieve in a lifetime. They’re a fine example to us all of how genuine academic and leadership talent can embrace a powerful sense of civic responsibility,” says Eric Gould, director of the University Honors Program.
