University of Denver to host area Day of Remembrance event

Day set aside to remember injustice suffered by Japanese during WWII

DENVER – The University of Denver (DU) will host a Day of Remembrance event Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Craig Hall Community Room at the University of Denver. The Day of Remembrance, first created in Seattle in 1978, acknowledges the February 19, 1942 signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that lead to the unconstitutional incarceration of over 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry.

The DU program will include reflections by community members and an overview of current anthropological research being done at the Amache internment camp by the University of Denver. A reception and open house with exhibits of artifacts from Amache will follow the program.

The University of Denver is proud of its relationship with the Japanese American community. During World War II, when many other institutions closed their doors to Japanese American students, DU welcomed them, sometimes even providing scholarship funds. Thus it is fitting that DU continue this legacy by being the first academic institution to host a Denver-area Day of Remembrance event.

During this day we remember the injustice suffered by the Japanese American community in order to prevent similar injustices from happening to any group of people today or in the future. It is a time to honor the experiences of the Issei and Nisei, the first and second generation Japanese, who endured an unwarranted internment, and it also serves as a time to promote education, encourage activism and support the continued fight against civil rights violations.
