Fred Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture Presents the film “Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good”

7th Annual event honors respected educator, Fred Marcus

DENVER — The Seventh Annual Fred Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture will feature be the film “Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good,” Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at 4 p.m. in the Driscoll Ballroom of the University of Denver. The film recounts the heroic actions of 29-year-old Winton who in 1939 saved 669 Czech children by bringing them to England and finding them foster homes. Tomas Graumann, one of those rescued by Winton’s efforts, will introduce the film, which will be followed by a kosher wine and cheese reception. Graumann currently lives in the Czech Republic where he is an English teacher.

The Fred Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture was founded by Audrey Friedman Marcus in memory of her husband Fred, who passed away in 2002. Under the auspices of the Holocaust Awareness Institute of the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Denver since 2007, this event has consistently drawn large crowds interested in the unusual Holocaust stories presented.

Because of the popularity, the deadline for reservations is January 21, 2009. Tickets are $12.00 each. A free parking pass for nearby university parking will be mailed with tickets. There is no charge for students ages 12-18 and Holocaust survivors, but reservations are required for them as well. Mail checks to the Holocaust Awareness Institute, 2000 East Asbury Avenue #157, Denver, Colorado 80203, along with the names of those who will be in attendance.

Attendees are asked to bring gently worn shoes to the event for the Holocaust Shoe Project. The shoes will be used to teach about the Holocaust and will then be donated to needy individuals.

Thanks to the generosity of the American Friends of the Czech Republic, each family that attends the lecture will receive a copy of Nicholas Winton’s Lottery of Life, the book on which the film was based. Audrey Friedman Marcus will also sign Survival in Shanghai: The Journals of Fred Marcus 1939-49 by Audrey and Rena Krasno, a recently published book based on Fred’s Shanghai diaries.
