Bachelor of Science (BS) in Animal Technology

Animal Technology combines three years of academic study on the DU campus with a 6-quarter or 8-quarter training experience at the Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology. This combined program earns a baccalaureate degree (from University of Denver) plus certification as an Animal Technologist (from Bel-Rea Institute). For students who complete an Associate degree at Bel-Rea before coming to DU, 45 hours will be accepted as transfer credit toward the major.

No new students will be accepted into this major after Fall 2010.

  • Animal Technology Major: 45 qtr hrs - transferred from Bel-Rea Institute only
  • Biology Minor: 20 qtr hrs
  • Second Minor: 20 qtr hrs
  • Math: 8 qtr hrs (mathematics/statistics)

Additional Requirements and Notes

All undergraduate majors must satisfy Common Curriculum requirements.

Advanced Placement (AP) credit for Calculus AB or Calculus BC may count toward the MATH 195x series for the BS according to the University approval policy (see the University of Denver Undergraduate Bulletin for details). Approval through the Department of Mathematics is required.

At least TWO YEARS OF CHEMISTRY, including one year of inorganic plus one year of organic, is required by most graduate medical programs and graduate research programs in the basic sciences. Some graduate programs also require or recommend Biochemistry.

To declare a major or minor fill out and submit a Declaration of Major/Minor form to the Registrar's Office.

Accreditation

A Bachelor of Science in Animal Technology degree is awarded by the University of Denver and is an academic degree. A certificate from Bel-Rea Institute confers eligibility to take an examination to become a registered Animal Technician. The Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology is accredited by the Committee on Animal Technician Activities and Training of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
