Active: An initiated member
Alumna: A member who is not affiliated with a collegiate chapter of a national sorority or fraternity
Invitation/Bid: An invitation for membership
COB: The opportunity for a chapter to incite men/women to membership if it did not fill its quota in formal recruitment or has not reached total. Chapters may continuous open bid any time during the school year except formal recruitment
Chapters: A chartered undergraduate or alumnae unit of a national fraternity or sorority
Colony: Status of a new chapter prior to installation
Greek: A term applied to members affiliated with Greek-letter organizations
Initiation: The ceremony in which a pledged new member becomes an active member
Legacy: The son, daughter, sister, or brother of an initiated member
NPC: National Panhellenic Conference. A conference body composed of delegates from 26 women's social fraternities and sororities
Panhellenic: A Greek word meaning "All-Greek." The central governing body found on all campuses that have nationally recognized women's social fraternities and sororities
Philanthropy: Active effort to promote human welfare
Potential New Member: A non-affiliated undergraduate student going through the recruitment process
New Member: A member of a fraternity or sorority who is not yet and initiated member
Recommendation: A written letter or statement recommending a potential new member for status

Recruitment: An organized activity to meet potential new members
Recruitment Guide: A neutral Panhellenic representative who temporarily leaves his/her affiliation to guide and support potential new members through the recruitment process
Sister: A term used within a women's fraternity or sorority when referring to other members
Total: The allowable chapter size, including both new and initiated members, as determined by the college Panhellenic Council
Quota: The number of new members determined by a local college Panhellenic Council, which any Greek chapter may pledge during a specified time
