Receiving, Grant Announcements/Funding Opportunities

ORSP Project Administrators can assist faculty in their search for external funding. Below is an explanation of the services available to investigators who are looking for grant and contract opportunities. This includes:

    1. Setting up individuals on the Community of Science database.
    2. Use of grants.gov website.
    3. Forwarding announcements to the ORSP PI listserv.
    4. Performing individual internet searches, including specific sponsors.

Database records determine which announcements are "matched." If you are not participating in the faculty database and would like to receive these monthly updates, please add yourself to the COS database. You will be on the distribution for the following month.

How to get Guidelines and Application Materials

ORSP orders program guidelines, application materials, and other information that may be needed for faculty members. ORSP will provide names/contacts, addresses, e-mail, phone and fax numbers. Also, any other pertinent information received regarding the program is distributed to faculty members that have inquired about the particular program.

Searches

When faculty or researchers are pursuing funding a project, the Project Administrator can perform an individualized funding search. This process begins with the investigator setting up an appointment to discuss the details of the idea or project. This meeting allows the investigator the opportunity to discuss the project one on one and provide specific information such as travel needs, funding amounts, and potential keywords.

Once the search is completed, the results are reviewed to insure the PI or University is eligible to apply and the opportunity is applicable to the project. Finally the deadline is reviewed to determine if the project requires a quick turn around for the investigator.

When searches are completed, the information is reviewed by the investigator. It is important for individuals to remember that searches are done on the basis that "more is better than less" and any information that is remotely related to the project is distributed. If there are any questions, the Project Administrator should be notified.

Community of Science, Introduction

The Community of Science Faculty Database (COS) represents the research interests and scholarly expertise of DU faculty and potential PI's as well as faculty and researchers from across the nation. The online system provides information to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), other universities, laboratories, professional societies, research and development companies, government agencies, and foundations who subscribe to the service.

Benefits to faculty and potential PI's include:

  • Individualized Research Announcements: This is ORSP's source of targeting announcements to relevant researchers. To receive grant announcements one must participate in the database.
  • Assists in locating faculty and other potential PI's on campus who have similar research and scholarly interests.
  • Provides information on those who have
    • Served on review committees
    • Had grants at specific agencies
    • International interest
University Advancement (UA) uses the database to compile groups of faculty and other PI's who have research in areas that donors are interested in funding.

Each individual record contains links to individualized relevant funding opportunities

Student Benefits:

  • Provides a means of locating faculty who have similar research interests to serve as mentors.
  • Can be used as a source to locate faculty to serve on dissertation committees.

Joining the database takes about an hour and the result is similar to an online vitae.
