Project Homeless Connect is a one-day event that serves as a one-stop shop, connecting homeless individuals to needed services, including but not limited to: employment, housing, healthcare, legal resources, IDs, Social Security and food-stamp benefits. More than 60 organizations from the Denver area will be present to provide these services.
PHC6 will provide the DU community an opportunity to put a face to homelessness as we begin to grapple with its consequences for our community at large. For PHC4, Tom Knecht from the Department of Political Science and Lisa Martinez from the Department of Sociology conducted a pre- and post-survey for volunteers to measure shifts in their attitudes about the homeless. As was evidenced from last year’s event, the pairing of volunteers and individuals helps to dispel the myths and misunderstandings about homeless individuals and families that keep us from finding real solutions to the social and economic crisis of homelessness. After the event, volunteers indicated they felt more comfortable with a homeless person and understand more about the structural reasons that people become homeless.
Those who participate in PHC6 will be exposed to a wide range of social issues, including: learning about the reasons for why 43% of Denver’s homeless population is women and children and examining the goals in Denver’s 10-Year plan to end homelessness, which outlines how much money the city of Denver can save by getting people into permanent housing.
