Welcome to the Philosophy Department
at the University of Denver!
Philosophy is an intricately articulated,
living human activity of critical and creative thinking with a still open
future. As such, however, it is securely rooted in a rich and fertile
tradition which goes all the way back to the very beginnings of Western
civilization, with parallel developments in other cultures.
The curriculum in philosophy
is designed to give students a broad grounding in the literature and methods
of philosophy and in philosophical approaches to contemporary problems.
Philosophy is inherently foundational for all other disciplines, and philosophical
training sharpens the student's ability to reason cogently, to formulate
basic concepts and questions clearly, and to work intelligently at answering
human problems. Philosophy curriculum is balanced between historical study,
philosophical problem areas, and applied courses.
March 2009
(l-r: Shaun Rakhshani, Donald Reinhard,Emily Bettinger, Cameron Stone, Brandon Fernandez-Comer)
On March 12-15, the philosophy department sent five DU students to Harvard University in Cambridge, MA to compete in the Bioethics Bowl, a debate competition that is part of the National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference. The team of students competed against 11 other bioethics bowl debate teams from around the country. The DU Bioethics Bowl team had fun, worked hard, performed excellently, and placed an admirable 5th out of 12!
