The Department of Philosophy
at the University of Denver offers an MA in philosophy but only
when done through the University's flexible dual degree program
in conjunction with an MA in Religious Studies (or other approved
discipline.) It also
participates in a joint PhD program with the Iliff School of Theology.
The philosophy faculty places a strong emphasis on research and
personal interaction with students. Our program is designed to meet
the needs of two kinds of students-those wishing to prepare for
doctoral work in philosophy and those seeking an individualized
course of study with a more interdisciplinary focus. Areas of concentration
include: the history of Western thought, interpretive and critical
theory, practical philosophy, meta-philosophy, and studies in creative
and critical reasoning about human nature and values.
Many
students who apply for the MA program in philosophy are also interested
in pursuing the PhD in religious and theological studies through
the joint program the University offers with the Iliff School of
Theology, and to which the philosophy department is an important
contributor. Formal admission to the doctoral program presupposes
a completed master's degree and a separate admission process. Students
who intend to apply to the joint PhD program should consult with
the department's graduate advisor as soon as possible to plan course
work accordingly.
Degree Conferred: Master of Arts (through the flexible dual degree program - see above).
In addition, the Philosophy Department is a participant in the Joint
D.U.-Iliff Ph.D. Program in Religious and Theological Studies.

undergraduate major in Philosophy is desirable, but talented students
from other areas will be considered for admission. The Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required. International

and be matriculated through the flexible dual degree program.
Master of Arts Flexible
Dual Degree Requirements (with Religious Studies - or other approved
discipline)
1) Forty-five
quarter hours (in addition to forty-five quarter hours in another
approved discipline under flexible dual MA program.) Students may
propose to have this amount reduced by a maximum of ten quarter
hours under appropriate circumstances as specified by the Graduate
Studies. In ALL cases see here for detailed flexible dual degree instructions.
2) A comprehensive exam over the history of Western philosophy.
3) A portfolio paper approved by a committee of three
department faculty.
4) An oral defense covering both the comprehensive exam on the history
of philosophy and the portfolio paper.
5) Requirements beyond coursework of Dual MA in Religious Studies (or other approved area)
Many students who apply for the M.A. program in Philosophy are
also interested in pursuing the Joint D.U.-Iliff Ph.D. Program in Religious and Theological
Studies. Formal admission
to the Joint doctoral program presupposes a completed master's degree
and a separate admission's process. Students who intend to apply to the Joint
Ph.D. Program should consult with the Department's graduate advisor
as soon as possible to plan coursework. Admission to the doctoral
program is not, however, automatic.
