Laurence J. Kirshbaum, president, LJK Literary Management, opened the Institute with a keynote address giving an overview of publishing. Following Larry, Charles Spicer, executive editor, St. Martin's Press, discussed the role of the editor.  Then he was joined by author Stephen Coonts, author, and Jody Rein, literary agent, to discuss editor-author-agent relations.
