Lisa Conant engages in the comparative study of law and society. She specializes in the politics of European legal integration, with a focus on the impact of court decisions in reforming policy and practice. Her book, Justice Contained: Law and Politics in the European Union , was published by Cornell University Press in 2002 and examines the influence of the European Court of Justice in promoting economic liberalization and the prohibition of discrimination based on nationality. She has also published on the Europeanization of national courts and the contested boundaries of European citizenship. Her current research interests concentrate on transformations in the rights and obligations of citizenship that derive from European Union law and the European Convention on Human Rights. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington after completing research as a doctoral fellow of the Social Science Research Council and Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies in Germany. Before coming to the University of Denver, she pursued postdoctoral research as a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Italy. In the department, Professor Conant teaches courses on comparative and international politics that address the intersection of law and politics, the role of courts and constitutions, the evolution of modern citizenship, and the politics of rights.
