Current Research

(1) The project focuses on democratic transitions in the context of 19th Century Globalization. The project examines three cases at different points in the 19th Century Atlantic Economy: Britain at the Core, Italy at the European Periphery, and Argentina at the Periphery. The research question asks: How did the expansion of trade advantage or disadvantage economic sectors and how did this influence the transition to democracy?

(2) While much attention focuses on religious revivals in America and the Middle East, European countries evidence a long-run secularization of politics. Italy, once a highly religious country, illustrates this secularization and its political consequences. The project proposes the up-dating and extension of an existing data archive, previously funded by the National Science Foundation, to examine the political consequences of religion and secularization.
