Class Scheduling and Classroom Assignment PolicyAuthority for Assignment of Space: Classrooms are assigned by the Office of the Registrar, unless authority is delegated. Academic units with classroom and conference/meeting space will have first priority for that space, providing that the requested classrooms are indicated on the Schedule of Courses form submitted to the Registrar by the required due date. These units must assign seminars and classes with small enrollments to academic conference/meeting spaces whenever possible. The Office of the Registrar will publish a Production Schedule with the annual scheduling deadlines and dates. Departments that submit both scheduling and classroom information on-time, accurately and within the scheduling grid will receive a higher priority for scheduling times and classroom preferences and cannot be bumped. Those departments submitting late or incomplete requests or changes or during non-standard times will receive the lowest priority in both scheduling and classroom assignment. Major departmental change requests (those involving the addition of new courses, changes in time or day, or fluctuation in enrollment figures) submitted after the published deadline will be processed after all other scheduling actions. All such changes must be approved by the dean or director. Requests for changes in classrooms will be made by administrative assistants in schools or departments and submitted to the Scheduling Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar. Standard Class Times and Days: Class meeting times will start only on the hour. Classes may begin as early as 7:00 a.m. Classes end 10 minutes before the hour. Class meeting days are MTWRF, MTWR, MWF, MW, TR. (Classes also meet on Saturdays.) Two-hour block classes will start at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:00 noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. or any time after 6:00 p.m. Standard Distribution of Classes Across Days and Times: 50% of the two-hour block classes offered by a department should be scheduled on Monday-Wednesday and 50% on Tuesday-Thursday. Departments and programs must distribute courses throughout the day, utilizing the following formula: At least 10% of a departments sections must begin before 10:00 a.m., and at least 10% must begin at 4:00 p.m. or later. One-hour classes must be evenly distributed in the two-hour time blocks. Labs are not included in the time distribution of courses. Evening courses can start at or after 6:00 p.m. and may start on the half hour, but need to be balanced across the specified day combinations. Non-standard courses will be given the lowest priority in general-assignment classroom scheduling. Technology Classrooms: Most classrooms are equipped with specialized technology to assist faculty with presenting course material. These classrooms are often referred to as smart-to-the-front or smart-to-the-seat. A smart-to-the-front classroom is one in which the instructors station has computer connections to a projector mounted in the room, to the Universitys network, and in some classrooms, to a VCR. In some cases, a computer is also installed in the instructors station. In a smart-to-the-seat classroom, each student seat has a connection to the Universitys network and a power connection, in addition to a smart instructors station. There are a number of classrooms with monitors for television, and VCR use can be requested. Miscellaneous: To assure that break-out rooms required for specified classes are available, these courses must be indicated on the Schedule of Courses form. To save classroom space, cross-listed courses between units must be shown on the Schedule of Courses form.
