Graduate Enrollment Certification (GEC) Policy

All graduate students on regular status, who have completed their course work and are within the time limits for the degree, are required to register for GEC credit every four quarters. (Research hours are not considered course work.) Students must register and pay for GEC credit by the last day of the effective quarter. Students who fail to register within one of any four consecutive quarters (including summer) will be considered inactive and will be dropped from active status. The student will not be reinstated without readmittance and payment of the GEC credit. GEC credit cannot be retroactive because of Financial Aid policies.

The GEC credit is not to be used for enrollment purposes while making up an incomplete. An exception is made if all other course work is completed and the student is working on the thesis or dissertation while, at the same time, completing the coursework required for the incomplete. It is the responsibility of the student and the graduate school or department to make this determination prior to approving eligibility for GEC credit.

The GEC credit provides graduate students -- who have finished their course work and are working on their theses, dissertations, or required internships -- library, e-mail, and campus computer lab privileges. Health insurance is available for GEC students. U.S. and permanent resident students may be eligible for loans or deferment of loans.

Graduate Enrollment Certification and Student Loan Eligibility
Enrollment procedures for graduate students applying for loans or deferments while either on internship or completing thesis/dissertation require completion of a "Graduate Enrollment Certification" form. Forms are available in Schools/Departments or the Graduate Studies Office, University Hall, Room 216.

Students must have completed all coursework (excluding research hours) to be eligible for GEC credit. GEC may not be used for enrollment purposes while making up Incompletes. Students must register for GEC by the last day of final exams of the term in which the GEC eligibility is to begin. Retroactive registration in GEC for purposes of loan eligibility or deferment is not allowed. The fee for any one or all of the following options is $150.00 for one quarter or more up to a four-quarter period of time (Summer Quarter included). For example, if a student meets the eligibility requirements and chooses both "loan eligibility" and "loan deferment," the fee will cover both. GEC eligibility for obtaining or deferring loans will cease upon the student's date of graduation.
