Rental Vehicles

If you are renting a car we encourage you to take all the insurance unless coverage is already provided based on the information below.

Types of Coverage offered by the rental car company:

  • Property Insurance (Collision Coverage):  Not necessary if renting the car with the Purchasing Card for University Business (Covered by PCard).  Vehicles that transport more than 8 people and luxury vehicles are not covered.

  • Personal Insurance:  Not necessary as long as all people in the car at all times are DU Employees (Covered by Workers’ Compensation)

  • Liability Insurance:  Always purchase available liability insurance (should be around $100K, $300K)

Reporting a claim under the property insurance from the purchasing card:

The benefit guide from the credit card states at the time of the accident, theft, or damage or when you return the rental vehicle, immediately ask the rental company for:

  • A copy of the Accident Report Form and claim document, which should indicate the costs you are responsible for and any amounts that have been paid toward the claim.
  •  A copy of the initial and final car rental agreement(s).
  • A copy of the repair estimate or itemized repair bill.
  • Two (2) photographs of the damaged vehicle, if available.
  • A police report, if obtainable.

The cardholder is then responsible for reporting the claim to the program administrator at 1-800-VISA-911 immediately, but in no event later than 45 days from the date of loss, or the claim will be denied.
