Hampden Center Storage Services & Archives

The Hampden Center is the University Libraries off-site storage facility. Materials stored at the Hampden Center can be requested online and picked up at the Library Lending Desk of your choice: Anderson Academic Commons, Bonfils Stanton Music Library, Iliff Ira J. Taylor Library, or Westminster Law Library. Deliveries to the Anderson Academic Commons arrive from the Hampden Center twice per day, Monday–Friday, and once on Sundays during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Deliveries are reduced to once a day, Monday–Friday, during breaks, interterms, and the Summer quarter.

Permanent Records

Some types of University records are vital to operations or have historical significance. These records are permanently preserved by the record owner or in the University Archives. DU's Records Retention Schedule prescribes the types of records that must be retained permanently and/or archived. The University Archives is particularly interested in the following types of University records:

  • Academic Council/Committee meeting minutes
  • Department annual reports
  • Publications

If you have records that you believe must be transferred to University Archives, or if you are not sure whether records maintained in your area should be transferred to the University Archives, contact Kate Crowe, Curator of Special Collections and Archives, for assistance.

Retention Schedule Records

Most types of University records must be regularly purged in accordance with the University Records Retention Schedule. The Hampden Center (HC)—University Libraries' high-density, off-site storage facility—offers services to help you store and purge your records in accordance with the Schedule. Located in Lakewood, the HC stores low-use serials and monographs, microforms, large archival materials, DU furniture, and University records. Throughout the year, materials are delivered once a day, Monday-Friday, to campus. During the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters deliveries happen twice-a-day to campus.

Staffed by 6 employees, the HC is made up of 2 MLIS graduates and 2 degree-seeking MLIS students at DU. Organizing, tracking, and servicing stored materials are our strengths. By using the storage infrastructure already in place at the HC, it will save you, and the University, money and time in complying with the University Records Management Policy and Retention Schedule. We also offer the option to digitize and electronically deliver requested documents faster than a campus delivery.

In an effort to work towards One DU, the HC provides resources to help with off-campus storage, records servicing and an existing supply chain. Avoid the high cost and unreliable customer service of a third-party vendor by storing your records at the Hampden Center.
