Tournament history
A Denver tradition, the Hoyt Brawner Memorial Basketball Tournament honors former DU athletic director Hoyt Brawner (1962 – 1974).
Brawner was an all-star basketball player at Denver’s Manual High School before joining DU’s basketball team. While here, he was twice named an All-Skyline conference player.
He began his coaching career at Castle Rock High School, coached basketball teams during his U.S. Navy days and coached at Wheat Ridge High School before returning to DU in 1949. He coached the men’s basketball team until 1962, when he took over as athletic director.
We honor Brawner’s enthusiasm and love of sports each year through this tournament, open to children in grades 6 and lower. It’s a source of pride for the University and a display of quality basketball, sportsmanship and competition.
