Learn Hockey Skating

These three levels of classes teach the fundamentals of hockey skating to kids who have completed Snow Plow Sam 3 or Basic 1. Skaters in this program learn how to maneuver faster and become more agile on the ice.

Proper skating techniques are the primary focus of learn hockey skating, and we teach all elements without a stick or puck. These levels prepare skaters ages 5 to 8 to enter the Jr. Pioneers Hockey U8 beginner program.

All players must wear helmets. Hockey skates are allowed at level 2 and required for levels 3 and 4.

Hockey 2

Skaters will learn:

  • a backward stance
  • skating forward using full-strides
  • forward one-foot glides
  • backward hustle
  • backward swizzles
  • glide turns
  • moving snowplow stops

Skaters will learn:

  • forward C-cuts on a circle
  • hockey turns with speed
  • forward slalom
  • forward stops and starts
  • backward v-stops
  • lateral marching crossovers

Hockey 4

Skaters will learn:

  • forward one-foot pushes on a circle
  • forward crossover glides
  • forward crossovers clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • alternating backward C-cuts
  • backward one-foot glides
  • mohawks
  • a hockey stop
