Areas of Research
Dr. Peter Laz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering. He directs the Probabilistic Mechanics Lab, which is part of the Center for Orthopaedic Biomechanics (www.du.edu/biomechanics). His research is focused in orthopaedic biomechanics and materials, and involves the application of probabilistic methods to assess the contributions of uncertainty. Recent funded projects have involved the development of statistical shape models to characterize anatomic variability in the knee and spine, the use of the extended finite element method (XFEM) to model hip fracture, and population-based evaluations of knee mechanics. In addition, he teaches a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses in solid mechanics and design, including Reliability, Optimization, Fatigue and Senior Design.
