Mechatronics for First Year Engineering Students

The Engineering program at the University of Denver has a three quarter Concepts course for first year students. The first two quarters of the sequence concentrate on the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering. The third quarter covers computer engineering and includes a Mechatronics project. The project uses ultrasound sensors, servomotors, and a MOSFET motor controller to control an autonomous vehicle. A micro-controller programmed by the students in assembly language, uses distance information from the ultrasound sensors to control the motion of the vehicle. A circuit board developed for the project has a Microchip PIC18F452 micro-controller, 8 leds connected to one of the digital input/output ports for monitoring data, and another digital I/O port is used to interface the ultrasound sensors and servo motors to the micro-controller. An expanded version of the circuit board is used for a third year project and includes interfaces for a magnetic compass, accelerometers, the PIC’s 10 bit ADC, an instrumentation amplifier, bridge circuit, and a proto-board area for students to added circuits for interfacing sensors to the micro-controller.
