Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Mission, Goals and Assessment

Mission

The mission of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department at the undergraduate level is to:

  • offer programs that support and complement the mission of the University of Denver
  • provide a general education in mechanical engineering that prepares students for employment and graduate study
  • include interdisciplinary engineering work in all programs
  • encourages the professional status of the faculty
  • foster the professional awareness of the students

Goals

Our goal is that our graduates will:

  • apply broad, industry-relevant communication and the teamwork skills that will drive career and professional accomplishments
  • demonstrate strong abilities in the fundamentals of engineering
  • apply knowledge from their undergraduate education to systematically solve engineering problems using the appropriate tools and technology
  • apply the design (including interdisciplinary systems) and laboratory skills expected of practicing engineers
  • flourish professionally in an increasingly global, dynamic and competitive marketplace and work environment

Program Assessment

To meet changing needs and improve our programs, we regularly evaluate how well our students are developing the 10 characteristics we aim for.  We look at:

  • student work
  • student evaluations
  • student performance on two examinations (one administered by us at the end of the second year, and the National Fundamentals of Engineering Examination taken in the final year of study)
  • student exit interviews
  • polls of recent alumni about the degree to which they feel we have met our goals
