Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology Grant Scholarship Chooses DU
Goncalo Martins brings a unique array of experiences to his studies at the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Before beginning his undergraduate studies, Goncalo had an important decision to make, to try and play professional soccer or pursue an academic degree leading to a career in engineering. Goncalo opted for the academic track and completed his Bachelor and Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Lisbon in Portugal in 2005 and 2007.
Goncalo is currently earning his Doctorate in Mechatronic Systems Engineering under the guidance of Dr. Kimon Valavanis. The two initially connected at a conference in Portugal where they identified a similar research interest. Goncalo followed-up with Dr. Valavanis after the conference and submitted his application material to pursue his Doctorate degree. He ultimately selected DU for the quality of education, environment, people and great weather in Colorado.
During his first year of study Goncalo received the Full Grant Scholarship from the Foundation of Science and Technology in Portugal. This covers a large portion of his tuition and provides him with a monthly stipend.
Goncalo has an innovative mindset and lives by the motto, "Do something you like. Don't do something against your will or because someone wants you to do it, and it will be much easier in the long run." Ultimately Goncalo wants to be happy in his career and life. It appears he is living his motto and enjoying every experience along the way.
