Do you believe everyone deserves a fair and equal chance? That basic human rights means basic human rights for ALL? If you want to learn how to "right the wrongs" of the world, the Social Justice Community (SJC) at DU may be the place for you!
Students begin their first quarter at DU by taking a 4-credit seminar called Foundations in Philosophy: Social Justice. This serves as an Arts & Humanities course (required for graduation) as well as fulfills the SJC requirement for fall quarter. From there, students take a 2-credit course in winter and also in spring, exploring power and privilege and how they relate to oppression and injustice. In all three seminars, many different and interrelated facets of social justice are examined through open dialogue and debate.
Other aspects of the SJC include dinners with guest speakers, two overnight retreats (fall and spring), and serving a minimum of 40 hours in the community, engaging with organizations and people committed to bringing about a better world. SJC students are involved in a number of other activities including, but not limited to, writing for the [dis]claimer, an alternative campus newspaper which was started by SJC students; and being members of student groups like the Queer Straight Alliance, Student Senate, Black Student Alliance and Latino Student Alliance.
