Applying to the PhD Program

Application dates

The GSSW Office of Admission must receive your completed application by Jan. 15, 2015 for you to be considered for entrance into the program in fall quarter 2015.  However, for best admission and financial aid consideration, we ask that you submit your PhD application by Dec. 15, 2014.  After this date, we will accept applications until our class is full. 

Entry dates

The GSSW doctoral program begins in fall quarter and is designed for full-time students.

How to apply

To apply, you must submit an application online. A completed doctoral application includes:

  • the doctoral application (submitted online)
  • a professional writing sample
  • a Statement of Professional and Educational Intent
  • an official transcript from all colleges or universities previously attended
    • Official paper transcripts must be mailed to the GSSW Office of Admission.
  • three written recommendations
    • You'll need reference names and valid email addresses during the online application process. Recommenders will be emailed the appropriate form and detailed instructions how to submit their recommendation electronically.
  • a résumé (submitted online)
  • a $65 application fee (submitted online or mailed separately)

You also must submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). The GRE must have been taken within five years of the date you apply to GSSW.  ETS Institution Code (GRE): 4842

If you are an international student, you also must submit the following additional materials:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (PDF)or IELTS results 
    • paper-based TOEFL score of 587 or Internet-based score of 95, with a speaking score of 26; or IELTS score of 8.0
    • ETS Institution Code (TOEFL): 4842
    • NOTE:  Students whose native language is not English and who are required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores will additionally be assessed by the DU English Language Center upon arrival on campus. Recommendations for additional English language training by the DU English Language Center must be completed alongside your doctoral coursework.
  • completed SEVIS Supplement form
  • copy of passport (photo or biographical page)
  • Proof of finances 
    • This financial verification form should be returned with a bank letter or other official verification showing how student tuition and living expenses will be financed.
