Dr. Flavio F. Marsiglia is the Principal Investigator of clinical research studies such as Familias Sanas/Healthy Families, a hospital-based intervention study funded by the Centers of Medicare/Medicaid Services (Health and Human Services) and aimed at improving the interconception care of Latina mothers. In partnership with colleagues and several Arizona school districts, and with support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health, he has developed and tested keepin' it REAL, a substance abuse prevention Model Program for middle school students. The manualized and licensed intervention is now being implemented across the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Marsiglia was the Principal Investigator of the NIDA/NIH funded social work research infrastructure center grant, one of only seven such grants awarded to schools of social work.  These research and teaching activities have a global focus.  He coordinates an ongoing international scholars' exchange program at SIRC and conducts research and training in partnership with universities in Mexico and Spain.

Dr. Marsiglia has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and recently co-authored a book, Diversity, Oppression and Change: Culturally Grounded Social Work. He serves on many scientific editorial boards and has been elected to serve on boards of national professional organizations such as the Society for Social Work and Research and the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research.  He serves on a permanent NIH scientific review panel and other special emphasis review panels.

Dr. Marsiglia received his PhD in social work from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University and his MSW from the School of Social Work at the University of Uruguay.   Prior to his academic career, he was a school social worker with the Bilingual Multicultural Department of the Cleveland Public Schools and later was a research scientist with the Research and Development Department of the same school district.  He conducted research activities related to the school district's compliance with a Federal desegregation case and oversaw the research and development activities related to the district's Drug Free Schools program.
