Project Bosnia Application Deadline Extended!

The application deadline for University of Denver students wishing to participate in Project Bosnia in 2012 has been extended to January 27, 2012.  Interested students who have not already done so should contact Associate Clinical Professor Ann Petrila, Director of Project Bosnia, for detailed information. Information sessions will be held on January 11 and 19 (location TBD).

Students Will Travel to Bosnia in Summer, 2012

Project Bosnia, the University’s oldest international service learning program, was founded by Dr. Peter Van Arsdale at DU’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 1996, the year after the Bosnian War ended.  Petrila, Director of Field Education at the Graduate School of Social Work, was named Director of Project Bosnia earlier this year. Under her leadership, the Project’s academic home has moved to GSSW.

Students participating in Project Bosnia in the summer of 2012 will first attend five class sessions at GSSW during spring quarter.  They will then travel to Bosnia to complete internships at a variety of local and international NGOs.  Project Bosnia participants will earn five academic credits. GSSW students have the option of applying those credits and their Bosnian internships toward their required concentration year field placements if they choose to do so.

New MSW Course Also Focused on Bosnia

“The Social Work Response in Post-War Bosnia,” an MSW course developed and taught by Petrila last spring, will be offered again in spring quarter, 2012. The course examines social, cultural, historical, political, economic, religious and ethnic characteristics of the former Yugoslavia as context for studying the genocide that occurred in the early 1990s. Students are exposed firsthand to the local, national and international efforts toward rebuilding and healing through lectures provided by faculty at the University of Sarajevo School of Social Work, interaction with Bosnian social work students and visits to NGOs focused on the post-war efforts.  Students also will visit war tribunal sites and other locations that were important during the war, including Srebrenica, site of the worst genocide since World War II.

Students Share Their 2011 Experiences

Ten University of Denver students, three of them from GSSW, completed eight-week internships as a part of Project Bosnia during the summer of 2011. Seven additional GSSW students completed the Petrila’s new MSW course.  Share these student experiences by clicking on the links below:
