This track prepares concentration year clinical practice students to work with adults, adolescents and children in a variety of settings including:

  • mental health and family services agencies
  • schools
  • treatment centers
  • community agencies

"Family" is broadly defined to include biological lineages, affiliational families and communities. Social workers using this perspective may intervene with individuals, couples, several members of a family, peer groups, work associates, school classrooms and organizations. Clients are viewed as being part of a larger context that includes race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ability and citizenship status. You will learn to apply assessment and intervention within this context, toward a goal of strengthening families and other systems.

If you select this track, you'll take:

  • an overview course on theories and practice of family therapy
  • two required courses on family therapy and social work practice with couples
  • a policy course
  • 4 elective courses
  • 2 practice evaluation research courses

You'll complete a field internship in an agency or program offering a wide array of services to families.
