On March 8, 2011, Charles Payne, PhD, the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor at University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Urban School Improvement; a Faculty Affiliate at the Consortium on Chicago School Research; and a Faculty Affiliate at The Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture, visited and gave a lecture entitled "Mobilizing Urban Communities on the Behalf of Children." On February 18, 2011, GSSW celebrated Black History Month with a performance by Sankofa, an ensemble of The Spirituals Project Choir.

Advances and Challenges in Evidence-Based Practice and Social Work Education

Keynote speakers included Dr. Tonya Edmond from Washington University in St. Louis and Dr. Aron Shlonsky from the University of Toronto, internationally-known experts in the field. They addressed critical issues and recent developments in evidence-based practice, social work education and social intervention as they apply to academic, agency and policy settings. A luncheon session featured an address by Colorado Senator Moe Keller, Vice Chair of the Joint Budget Committee. Todd Saliman, Director of the Colorado Office of State Planning and Budgeting, also spoke at the luncheon. Two panels of social work educators, policy experts, administrators and practitioners discussed critical issues in evidence-based practice at local, state, national and international levels.
Answering the Carnegie Initiative Call to Action: Rethinking Social Work Doctoral Education
The Graduate School of Social Work celebrated the 40th Anniversary of its Doctoral Program by hosting a seminar entitled "Answering the Carnegie Initiative Call to Action: Rethinking Social Work Doctoral Education" on May 2, 2009. This all-day event included presentations by three national scholars, discussions led by former GSSW Doctoral Directors and GSSW's first Notable Scholar Award.
