Natural Hazards in Hawaii

Description: This is a field course designed to provide students with an introduction to the natural hazards of Hawaii and the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) in natural hazard assessment. Emphasis will be placed on the types of hazards that occur in the Hawaiian Islands. Field visits to to natural hazard centers will demonstrate the mitigation and planning processes in practice. Field mapping exercises will allow students to explore the analytical techniques that support hazard risk and assessment, mitigation, and emergency response training.
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required.
Approximate travel costs*:
Airfare: $900 (Students are responsible for making their own flight arrangements to and from Honolulu.)
Food: $50 per day (Approximate)
Program Fee: $900 (Added to tuition bill. Covers lodging, ground transportation, inter-island flight, and entry fees as necessary.)
Cancellation Fee $900 (Applied when student drops course after being officially registered.)
