Restrictions: This course is designed for non-business majors. Business majors are discouraged from registering for this course.

Description: This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are non-business majors. It is directed towards students who have not had any management or entrepreneurship courses in their regular curriculum (e.g, Engineering, International Studies, and graduate students who do not have a business undergraduate degree).  This course gives the student a comprehensive understanding of management principles, business strategy and entrepreneurship. All business majors will cover these topics in MGMT 2000, MGMT 3280 and MGMT 3800.

This course is designed to make the student competitively superior in starting, running and managing a successful small business. The following topics will be included:

    ·  Identify the ingredients of a successful entrepreneur
    ·  Develop a comprehensive feasibility study and a business plan for a new company
    ·  Learn how to craft competitive strategies to succeed as a new business domestically
       and internationally
    ·  Understand the environment you are in and the resources available in order to
       compete successfully.
    ·  Learn what NOT to do.

Once a new business is launched, there are several key skills that must also be learned in order for the business to be successful in the long-term. Planning is the first step. It’s here that the vision mission and goals are established. This step lays out the plan of action and provides direction. It also helps to minimize redundancies and waste. Organization entails the selection of a good team and understanding how all available resources (human, financial, other) should be used effectively. Learning solid leadership skills is a key ingredient in the success of a small business. A good leader challenges the process, inspires a shared vision among the team, enables them to act by providing the necessary tools, motivates them, and encourages them. Excellent leadership skills further include good communication, knowledge of the processes, good decision making, delegation, acting as a change agent, being innovative and operating in a legal, ethical and moral manner, while constantly striving for continuous improvement. Lastly, a successful entrepreneur must know how to control the operations of the organization, since this provides insight into how well the company is doing. Control includes assessment of all personnel, processes and products by constant evaluation using a variety of assessment tools to ensure that the organization is running in the most efficient and effective manner. Control also includes providing feedback, rewarding employees for a good job while re-evaluating and correcting issues/situations that may not be going as planned.
