ENGL 2708 - 4 credits

Dates: Dec. 3-10, 2014
Location: Accra & Elmina, Ghana, Africa
Instructor: Maik Nwosu
Registration Deadline: Oct. 17, 2014

Described variously as "the Land of Sunshine" and "a nation with [a] reputation as the friendliest in Africa," Ghana has gone through remarkable phases in its history since then. In its political, social, economic and cultural accomplishments as well as challenges, it incarnates the movement of (West) African history from the precolonial to the postcolonial era.  As we explore this history and its defining vision, this course will particularly highlight Ghanaian aesthetics in literature, art, music, and cinema (specifically "Ghollywood," the popular straight-to-DVD Ghanaian film industry.) Besides assigned readings of literary and critical texts, the course will incorporate visits to pertinent sites of African history and experience in Accra and Elmina, Ghana.
