Melting Pot Britain

ENGL 2708 - 4 credits

Course Dates: December 14-21, 2014
Location: London & Liverpool
Instructors: Maik Nwosu
Registration Deadline: October 1 or when course is full (SPACE IS LIMITED)

Description: The convergence of African, Caribbean, and Asian immigrants in Britain over the past half-century or so (in a recent migration phase that in some respects traces a path back to a much older one) has significantly affected socioeconomic life in Great Britain. In "The Empire Writes Back," Pico Iyer notes: "The shelves of English bookstores are becoming as noisy and polyglot and many-hued as the English streets. The English language is being revolutionized from within." And other aspects of "English" culture too. In this course, we will study the character of the recent multicultural convergence in Britain, including its roots in transatlantic slavery and colonial rule. Particularly highlighting Black British aesthetics (in literature, art, music, and cinema), we will examine the phenomenon of Black Britain in the context of diasporic and citizenship discourses. Besides assigned readings of literary and critical texts, the course will incorporate visits to pertinent sites of Black British history and experience in London and Liverpool, England.
