Description: This course will rigorously and reflectively examine best way to manage community partnerships. Because many of the definitions, descriptions and suggestions about these partnerships are contested, the course will focus narrowly on key issued of managing within such ambiguity and complexity, where diverse actors involved bring disparate interests, ambiguous goals, and fuzzy theories of change into loose alliances to design and implement interventions (Baum, 2001). Community engagement for example, 'presents a challenge to universities to be of and not just in the community; not simply to engage in knowledge transfer but to establish a dialogue across the boundary between a university and its community which is open ended, fluid and experimental' (Watson, 2003).
