Description: In this course students will travel to the heart of global derivative trading, Chicago, and gain firsthand knowledge and experience in developing investment strategies that utilize derivatives to manage risk. Over $3 billion in global derivative trading volume takes place in Chicago, which is nearly twice the trading volume of New York (World Business Chicago, 2010). Additionally, over half of exchange-based derivative trading in the U.S takes place in Chicago (World Business Chicago, 2010). Students will have the opportunity to interact with trading professionals from the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and learn strategies firsthand from a professional money manager. Daily classes will take place at the CBOE overlooking the trading floor which students will also tour. Students will also hear guests lectures from traders and high ranking industry professionals. This course will offer an overview of derivative securities and introduce students to the practical application of using derivatives as a part of a portfolio investment strategy. The course will discuss issues pertaining to the implementation and performance evaluation of investment strategies. The course will conclude with student groups presenting their investment strategy which incorporates derivatives.
