Information on Scrubbing Computers for Recycling from Your Department

UTS provided this information for clearing the data from computers that are about to be disposed of from your departments. Make sure you do this process or have UTS do this process, to limit your department and university liability.

  1. Go to sourceforge.net
  2. In the search function type: "Darik Boot and Nuke"
  3. Save a copy of this program to your desktop from the website.
  4. Save a copy of the program to a floppy disk or to a flash drive. (You are saving it to one of these mediums, so that depending upon what drives are on the machines to be cleared and you will have a way to activate the program.)
  5. You might want to also save the program to a CD. This would be a reference copy. (The CD format, as far as is known, will not activate the program.)
  6. Delete the program from your desktop.
  7. Put the floppy disk or flash drive into the machine to be scrubbed.
  8. Start the computer.
  9. The program will cycle through to a menu where you will type in "autonuke"
  10. Let the program run for as long as is needed. The program will let you know how long is left to run the program.
  11. Do this for all machines to be scrubbed.
  12. This will protect your department and the university from possible liability issues.
