Discoveries Schedule
Below is a sample schedule for Discoveries at DU. Please note that this schedule is subject to change for 2008. We have listed it here to give you a rough idea of what to expect from DU's orientation week. You will receive a complete schedule on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 with locations and further information.
To offer students an individualized orientation experience Discoveries (Orientation) groups are small and limited to 15-20 students. There are 80 different Discoveries groups and each group has an individual schedule. You will receive your individual Discoveries Group schedule when you arrive on-campus on Monday, September 1, 2008. A broad overview of the schedule is offered to help you and your family anticipate the activities during orientation week.
Monday, September 1, 2008
9:00 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.: Move In to the Residence Halls/ Check-in for Orientation
Students will move-in to the residence halls according to their assigned check-in time. Those students with assignments to odd-numbered rooms may check-in starting at 9:00am and students with assignments to even-numbered rooms may check-in starting at 11:30am. If you arrive prior to your designated check-in time you will be asked to wait, so please make arrangements accordingly. Students can check their room assignment by logging on to myWeb.du.edu and visiting the Housing section.
Commuter students (those living off-campus) check-in at Driscoll Student Center North, on the lower level in the Commons by 5:00pm.
Parents and family members participating in Parent/Family Orientation should check-in at the tents near your student’s residence hall (those living in Centennial Towers, please go to the tent near Centennial Halls). If you are parent/family of a commuter student (those living off-campus) please come to the Driscoll Student Center, Campus Commons, located on the lower level of the north side of the building to check-in for Parent/Family Orientation.
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Discoveries Orientation Resource Fair
Driscoll Ballroom, 2nd Floor of the Driscoll Student Center North
Join DU departments and local banks for the Discoveries Orientation Resource Fair. This is an opportunity for you and your student to chat with banks and with DU departments to learn more about the services that are offered and how they can assist your student’s transition to DU and in their future academic and social endeavors.
DU departments who will be featured at the fair: Bursar's Office. Campus Safety, The Center for Academic and Career Development, The Center for Multicultural Excellence, Financial Aid, First Year Experience, Greek Life, Health & Counseling Center, Library, Parent Program, Rape Aggression Defense Program, Second Year Experience, Sexual Assault Response and Prevention, Student Employment and Study Abroad.
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Disability Service Programs
Craig Hall, Room 284
Students with disabilities who want to request accommodations (examples: extended time testing and accessible classrooms) should come during this time to meet with staff to learn what documentation is required, how to request accommodations and how to work with faculty on academic modifications. Students may quickly learn about policies and procedures by looking at the online version of the Handbook for Students with Disabilities at www.du.edu/disability, then click on “publications.” Questions may also be directed to DSP staff by calling 303-871-2278 or 2455.

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Lunch

Take a break and have lunch compliments of Discoveries. Stay and eat or pick lunch up and take it with you!
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: African American Alumni Assocation
Gottesfield Room, Ritchie Center
New and current Black Scholars are invited to a reception in their honor in the Gottesfeld Room in the Ritchie Center from 11:30am to 1:30pm. There will be a brief presentation from Noon to 12:30pm. 11:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: DU Latino Alumni Assocation & CME
Main Dining Room, HRTM
Students, their Family are welcome. They can come and meet current Latino students, staff, faculty and Alumni! Learn about resources and activities on campus. They will opportunities to sign up to be matched with a Latino Alumni Mentor and become a member of the Latino Student Alliance!

Parents of commuter students and commuter students are invited to join Student Life staff at Pioneer Place to learn more about how to manage the art of commuting and ask any questions you have about life on and off of campus.
7:15 p.m. sharp! Meet your Orientation Group!
All Students - Report to Soccer Field! (Outside the Ritchie Center)
Meet your Orientation Group! Students need to report to the practice fields west of the Ritchie Center to meet their orientation leader. Students will meet and sit with their orientation groups for Pioneer Passage on Tuesday morning, so please make you are on the field to meet your group by 7:15pm.
8:30 p.m.: Residential Students meet in Residence Halls
Students living in the residence halls will have meetings on their assigned floors.
Please note that due to Labor Day, not all offices will be open at the University of Denver. Offices that will be open and their hours include:
University of Denver Bookstore (Monday, September 4, 10:00am–5:00pm)
University of Denver Pioneer ID Card Office (8:30am–6:00pm)

8.45 a.m. - 9.30 a.m.: Pioneer Passage
Hamilton Gymnasium in the Ritchie Center
Pioneer Passage is a celebratory welcome for new students and families. Come hear from the Provost, selected faculty and the Undergraduate Student Government President. Dress is casual. Immediately following Pioneer Passage students will meet in their orientation groups for the first time.
The Remainder of Tuesday: New students will meet in their Discoveries groups and participate in the following activities during the day:
Discoveries Dialogues are sessions throughout the week designed to assist students in their transition to academic life at the University of Denver. During Dialogues you will participate in discussions with you peers, faculty advisors and Discoveries Orientation Leaders. You will also learn more about University Undergraduate Requirements, major and minor requirements, academic resources at DU and how to register for courses and design a plan of study.
Laptop Configuration
You will learn more about University of Denver technology and configure your laptop to access the DU Network and printers. Learn more about the laptop requirement and specifications at www.du.edu/laptops and in the section of your notebook.
Language Placement Exam
You will have the opportunity to take a placement exam if you would like to see if you could place in a higher level of a language course or test out of the requirement of one year of a second language.
4:30 p.m. All University Lectures
Students, parents and family members are invited to engage in learning as you listen to selected members of University of Denver faculty share their advice, experiences and passion for teaching. The lectures are designed to offer new students an opportunity to experience the breadth of the liberal arts curriculum.
5:30p.m. or later: Dinner with Parents and Family or your Discoveries Orientation Leader
5:30 p.m. Community of Excellence Scholars Program
Community for Multicultural Excellence
The
University of Denver’s Community of Excellence Program is designed to create and sustain a dynamic community of student scholars, foster a network of talented and gifted students, and identify and utilize the talents of student scholars to make positive contributions to the DU community. Members of the Community of Excellence Scholars Program, please join us at the Center for Multicultural Excellence (1981 S. University Blvd.) from 5:30-7:00PM. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to meet other Community of Excellence scholars, learn more about the program, and visit with staff. Food will be provided!
7:30 p.m.: Residence Floor Meetings & Commuter Social
You will have Residence Floor Meetings for Residential Students and Commuter students (live off-campus) will have a chance to get to know other commuter students at the commuter social.
9:00 p.m.: Dueling Pianos, Sponsored by DUPB

Come watch two of America’s top traveling musicians playing your top requested hits. The audience is always a part of the action, singing and dancing right along side the musicians in this pub style atmosphere. You won’t want to miss this show, as well as all of the free DUPB giveaways that will help make your first year of college that much better. 8:45 a.m: All University Lecture
Join the campus community and take advantage of the opportunity to hear from selected faculty who want to help you make the most of your time at DU. These lectures are designed to offer new students an opportunity to experience the breadth of the liberal arts curriculum.
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.: Students will meet in Discoveries Groups for Dialogue Sessions.
Location is determined by the Orientation Leaders and their groups
Activities will include: advising based on your major and advising with you faculty mentor (this person is your Dialogues instructor).
12:45 p.m.: Major Advising
Students will meet with college and departmental faculty to learn more about major and minor requirements.
5:15 p.m. – 10:15 p.m.: Community Cornerstones
Davis Auditorium, Sturm Hall
Your guide to Citizenship & Community Standards at DU. Learn about safety, alcohol and drug abuse information, sexual assault, community, and helpful resources. There are three sessions between 5:15pm and 10:15 p.m. and you will be assigned one to attend. This session is required to receive your fall registration. Alumni Association will be present outside of the Community Cornerstones sessions with gifts and refreshments.
7:45 p.m.– 10:00 p.m. Recreation at the Ritchie Center
Gates Fieldhouse & Joy Burns Ice Arena, Ritchie Center
When you and your orientation group aren’t participating in community cornerstones, go to the Ritchie Center for some recreation. You can work out, play racquetball, or play squash at the Coors Fitness Center. Also, remember to DODGE – DIP – DUCK – DIVE – and DODGE for a little Dodgeball in the Gates Fieldhouse from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. Or you can gracefully glide over to the Joy Burns Ice Arena for open ice skating from 7:45pm to 10:00pm. Come watch the high-flying, web-slinging, updside-down-hanging action of SPIDERMAN 3 along with free popcorn and other DUPB free giveaways. Come strut your stuff at the
Pub for some jammin' karaoke. You can pick your favorite song from today's popular hits to old classics. Don't want to sing? Come watch your friends and orientation leaders make fools of themselves while you enjoy some free gelato from Denver's very own Nash.

Impulse theater is a wildly funny mix of comedy, theater and audience interaction. The quick-witted cast of talented actors keeps you laughing from start to finish and inspires you to return again and again. Based in historic Lower Downtown Denver (LoDo), this highly-energized, smartly-improvised show plays to sold-out houses every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, but we’ve decided to bring them to DU for one night only. 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.: Master Hypnotist Jim Wand sponsored by Campus Activities
Try to imagine your friends putting aside their inhibitions to travel on a unique adventurous journey. That’s what you can expect as Jim Wand puts his skills as a master hypnotist to use on DU students. Each show is custom made for the audience using current events, local history, and the vibe of the volunteers that come straight from the audience.
