Tips for Succeeding
at a Career Fair, from Michelle Sexton,
who met her future employer at a DU Career Fair
o Definitely dress to impress! Make sure you look professional, and make sure your body language shows that you want to be there.
o Keep in mind that recruiters want you to succeed! Don't let yourself get intimidated. They are there to give you the information you need about their company and to answer questions – so ask them – if you are interested in working for their company, make sure they don't doubt that for a second.
o If you did your research ahead of time, make it known. Bring up something great you read about their company (whether that be an initiative they announce on the company website, a news article, etc.) – people love to hear that they do things well.
Michelle's Career Autobiography
I attended career fairs throughout my junior and senior years to find internships, scope out what kind of career opportunities were out there for me, and network with business people in the Denver community. The career center website was a great resource for me to find the different events that were going on and companies that were coming to campus. I stopped at the Sports Authority booth because it was a well known retailer with product that I personally love and use, so I thought it would be a great company to work for. I spoke with the recruiter about her experience at the company and really connected with the things she said in terms of company culture, benefits, training, and development.
I started with Sports Authority in a rotational training program, called the Merchandise Training Program, which gave me a knowledge base of the retail industry, and the business behind it. We got to hear from the executive leadership team about the company's goals and vision, we spent time in the stores learning the base of the business, and we trained in two different departments at the corporate office. I learned a lot about how a business operates and succeeds during that time.
