Alumni Mentor Program: How it Works

The Matching Process

The LEP Alumni Mentor Program matches students and alumni based on their background and interests.

Registration

Student Mentees

  1. Complete an online registration form with information on your academic, career, and personal background.

  2. Search for mentors based on a number of criteria (i.e. location of alumni, industry they work in, years of experience).

  3. View the alumni profiles and select the one you would like as mentor. An email will then be sent to the prospective mentor asking for his/her approval of the match. If the prospective mentor accepts the request, both you and mentor will be matched and notified immediately. If the prospective mentor declines the request, you will have to select another mentor.

Alumni Mentors

  1. Complete an online registration form with information on your academic, industry, and personal background. Indicate the number of students you would like to mentor.

  2. Wait for the students to register during an official registration period.

  3. If a student requests you as mentor, you will be notified by email and have the option to approve or decline the match. After you accept your maximum number of student mentees, you will be out of the search pool and no longer be available.

The Mentoring Process

The LEP Alumni Mentor Program will provide you with advice on how to make the most of the mentoring relationship. For instance, once the match is made we will send out an email with a tip sheet on how to make the initial contact and grow the relationship over time. Once in a while, we will also send email reminders to make sure both of you are in touch. However, we will not force you to follow set timelines or hard procedures because we understand you are busy and it's best to let you set the pace and schedule for your mentoring relationship. In short, we will provide you with the resources to achieve your objectives, but you will ultimately be the architect, and benefactor, of your mentoring experience.
