Photography Workshop: “Light from a Dark Room”
Shwayder Art Building, University of Denver
Friday, February 22nd (9:00am – 11:00am)
Saturday, February 23rd (9:00am – 11:00am)
This workshop celebrates the most basic, but also the most beautiful magic of photography. In the School of Art and History's photography darkroom at the University of Denver, participants will load paper that has been sensitized with silver salts, into pinhole cameras. We will then make photographs outside by capturing light inside the camera, on the sensitized paper. To complete this easy and fun process we will develop our captured light images back in the darkroom. The end results are beautiful black and white photographs, or light drawings.
This event will also coincide with the exhibition of Duane Michaels’ work which will be on view in the Victoria H. Myhren Gallery inside the School of Art & Art History.
Professor Lecture: DU History in Pictures – Sturm Hall Room 254
Friday, February 22nd (9:00am – 10:30am)
Steve Fisher - University Archivist
If you think looking at pictures is a breeze, DU archivist Steve Fisher’s book of vintage photographs, University Park and South Denver, may prove you wrong. The 120 images Fisher chose for his collection take close scrutiny to fully appreciate the wealth of people, landmarks and historic context. The photos are “the tip of the iceberg,” Fisher says — maybe one percent of the visual archives available to him in collections at Penrose Library, the Colorado Historical Society, the Denver Public Library and the Washington Park Profile newspaper. This presentation is based on his book, which is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. It shows page after page of fascinating glimpses into the history of DU and the environs, most notably the University Park neighborhood and former town of South Denver.
Professor Lecture: Parenting in a Digital Age – Sturm Hall Room 253
Friday, February 22nd (10:30am – 12:00pm)
Lynn Schofield Clark - Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: Media, Film and Journalism Studies
How are parents coping with the new challenges of digital and mobile media? In this presentation, Dr. Lynn Schofield Clark reviews interview-based research on this subject that is featured in her 2012 book, The Parent App: Understanding Families in a Digital Age (Oxford University Press). Come and learn the latest on cyberbullying, sexting, dumbing-down, distraction, and more, and debate these new phenomena as Clark sets them in the larger context of research into family communication, positive parenting practices, and the enduring digital divide.
