Career Checklist

DU's Career Center helps place students and alumni in roles that help them positively impact the world. However, your process must begin early. Use the following checklist to help you develop strategies for marketing yourself, researching employers and conducting your job search.

Fall Quarter
  • Update your DU Careers Online profile
  • Fine-tune your resume and cover letters through tips at the Career Center, and ask a career counselor to review your documents.
  • Attend job search-strategy workshops
  • Schedule a mock interview with a career counselor. (See more interview tips by visiting the Career Center.)
  • Take graduate school entrance exams. (View our "Graduate School and Test Prep Information" page for helpful resources.) 
  • Complete graduate school applications.
  • Compile a list of three-to-five professional references. (See our "Proactive Job Searching" guide for tips.)
  • Get letters of recommendation and references. 
  • Identify your job skills and goals
  • Meet with your career counselor to discuss your job-search strategy.
  • Research employers in your field of interest, and develop a list of organizations to contact.
  • Begin/continue your job search. 
  • Attend the DU Fall Career & Internship Fair. 
  • Continue building your professional network through the DU Professional Network. 
  • Check DU Careers Online frequently for new on-campus recruiting opportunities, and submit applications for those organizations with which you'd like to interview.
Winter Quarter
  • Attend career exploration and development workshops. 
  • Attend the DU Winter Career & Internship Fair. 
  • Continue your search for jobs and internships. 
  • Continue to explore DU Careers Online for new and updated job and internship postings, on-campus recruiting and the DU Professional Network.  
  • Continue building your professional network through the DU Professional Network. 
Spring Quarter
  • Finalize plans for jobs and internships.
  • Attend workshops to build post-graduation career skills.
  • Attend the DU Spring Non-Profit & Government Career Fair. (See "How to Work a Career Fair" for more information.)
