At the University of Denver we view parents/guardians as partners in the success of our students. Together, parents/guardians and DU staff can collaborate to ensure that students are making the most of their educational opportunities at the University of Denver. While students may sometimes make lapse in their decision making, our goal in Student Conduct is to provide the opportunities to develop life skills, to learn from life experiences, and grow as responsible community members.
The Parents Program, a part of the Division of Student Life, facilitates communication and acts as a liaison between the University and parents and family members. They can be a resource to help parents/guardians learn different ways to best support their student at DU. To contact someone from the Parents Program, please refer to their webpage.
We also feel the best strategies are the ones that can help prevent student misconduct. We encourage parents/guardians to keep open lines of communication with their students and encourage their positive behavior on campus, such as academic integrity, involvement and engagement in the campus community, and participation in co-curricular events on campus, just to name a few. We would like to see all Pioneers living up to the Pioneer Pledge: That they will act with Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't Student Conduct staff tell me about the incident in which my student was involved?
Due to the Federal Education Rights and Protection Act (FERPA), Student Conduct staff members may be limited in what they can share with you regarding your student's case unless we have a signed FERPA waiver on file from your student. However, Student Conduct staff members are free to answer general questions about the Student Conduct Process and possible outcomes.
How can I assist my student who has been documented in an incident?
Many parents wish to know more details about the incident in which their student was involved and what the subsequent process will look like. Student Conduct encourages parents to discuss the incident with their student.
Student Conduct staff will talk about the case and related information with your student directly. However, you may serve as their "support person" during any student conduct hearing at DU. This means you will be able to attend the hearing and be present to support your student, but you will not be able to actively participate by speaking on their behalf.
If you cannot be on campus, and your student is appearing before a Conduct Review Board, encourage them to seek the assistance of a Student Life Conduct Liaison. These trained professional staff members and DU students can provide guidance for the Conduct Review Board process and outcomes. Information on the program is available here.
