COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

THEA 1010, 1011, 1012 Stage Movement and Dance (1 quarter hour each)
Movement performance class for dancers and non-dancers alike. Topics may include: Stage Combat, Yoga, Broadway, Period Movement, Tai Chi, Movement Analysis. Check with Department for current offerings.

THEA 1861 Theatre Imagination (3 quarter hours)
Identifies personal barriers to creativity and learning, and offers ways to eliminate such barriers. This course includes exercises that focus on relaxation, intuition, theatrical story-telling, conscious problem-solving techniques, text interpretation, group collaboration, artistic expression and performance skills.

THEA 1862 Discovering Dramatic Literature (3 quarter hours)
A survey of theatrical literature and modes of representation from ancient times to the modern day, familiarizing students with exemplary texts from a variety of cultures and epochs (both Western and Eastern), and developing the requisite skills to actively engage a piece of dramatic literature in terms of its constituent elements, genre, socio-cultural era, or standing within (or without) "the canon."

THEA 1863 Aesthetics in Performance (3 quarter hours)
Integration of theories of performance and their practice from the Greeks to the present.

THEA 2010 Modern Dance Techniques II (2 quarter hours)
This course is designed to expand the dancer's understanding of and experience in the performance skills of modern dance. Modern II is a highly energized class focusing on articulate physical expression, keen sense of musicality and a commitment to the drama of the moment.

THEA 2871 Acting I (3 quarter hours)
Basic exploration of the craft of acting through a variety of applications in the following areas: sensory, physical and vocal awareness; imagination; empathy; relaxation and trust; listening and receiving; observation; personalization; subtext; script analysis; given circumstances; improvisation; physical action; professional work ethic; memorized performance.

THEA 2880 Scene Design I (3 quarter hours)
Exploration of methods, techniques and procedures involved in transforming scenic concepts into actual practice.

THEA 2881 Lighting Design I (3 quarter hours)
Exploration of methods, techniques and procedures involved in transforming lighting concepts into actual practice.

THEA 2882 Costume Design I (3 quarter hours)
Design I basics include script analysis, historical research, rendering skills, the effects of light and color on fabric and how those elements are perceived on stage. You can expect to work on a minimum of 3 plays and 1 research project.

THEA 2883 Sound Design I (3 quarter hours)
An introduction to the tools, principals and theory ("psycho-acoustic
manipulation") of sound design for the theatre. Using state-of-the-art equipment and programs, students will learn how to create original music scores and sound effects for live theatre. No previous musical training is necessary-just a willingness to play!

THEA 2885 Directing I (3 quarter hours)
Introductory course that explores the director's role in interpreting a text and in leading the theatrical collaboration to successfully communicate that interpretation to an audience. This course identifies and develops necessary skills in script analysis, staging techniques, actor characterization, design elements and production organization through applied practice.

THEA 2890 Theatre History I (3 quarter hours)
An examination of the primary aspects of international theatrical performance, theory and conventions from the Ancient Greeks to the latter Renaissance (c 1650), tracing the development of theatre architecture, theatrical design concepts, theatre technology, acting styles, and playwriting as reflections of the larger socio-cultural milieu.

THEA 2891 Theatre History II (3 quarter hours)
An examination of the primary aspects of international theatrical performance, theory and conventions from the mid-17th century to the beginnings of the modern theatre (c1890), tracing the development of theatre architecture, theatrical design concepts, theatre technology, acting styles, and playwriting as reflections of the larger socio-cultural milieu.

THEA 3603 Theatre History III (3 quarter hours)
An examination of the primary aspects of international theatrical performance, theory and conventions from the late 19th century through the present, tracing the development of theatre architecture, theatrical design concepts, theatre technology, acting styles, ideological movements ("ism"s) and playwriting as reflections of the larger socio-cultural milieu.

THEA 3265 Computer Scenographics (3 quarter hours)
An exploration of computer software as it applies to the creation of scenery, lighting, costume and sound designs.

THEA 3612 Modern Dramatic Literature (3 quarter hours)
An in-depth survey and critical analysis of modern dramatists and major stylistic movements ("ism"s), from Ibsen and Strindberg (late 19c) to Kushner and Parks (early 21c).

THEA 3711 Playwriting (3 quarter hours)
A beginning course in crafting scripts for the stage.

THEA 3760 Stage Management (3 quarter hours) Theoretical and practical applications of stage management are learned. Class-work mirrors that of the current show in production from production meetings through performance.

THEA 3861 Seminar In Theatre (1 quarter hour)
Roundtable discussions of play-selection, production requirements and creative strategies taken the year prior to the Senior Practicum Project (THEA 3862).

THEA 3862 Practicum In Theatre (3 quarter hours)
Senior capstone project resulting in a fully-staged production of the student's choice.

THEA 3865 Seminar In Dramatic Literature (3 quarter hours)
Selected topics, periods, styles or critical fields, ranging from the Ancient World to the postmodern present. Please see department for current offerings.

THEA 3872 Acting II (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 2871)
Intermediate acting course, building upon the principles and experiences of Acting I. This course aims to deepen skills in dynamic and truthful characterization, script analysis and physical action, as applied to roles from Shakespeare. Includes techniques in understanding Shakespeare's language and verse through individual and group investigation, as well as through rehearsal and performance of assigned scenes.

* THEA 3873 Acting III (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 3872)
Advanced acting course, building upon the cumulative experiences of Acting I and II. Full immersion into the actor's process, as applied to a specific focus area selected from a wide range of possible playwrights and/or subjects (Molière, Shaw, the Greeks, 10-Minute Plays, mask work, physical comedy, solo performance, vocal techniques, improvisation, etc); check with Department for current offerings.

* THEA 3880 Scene Design II (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 2880)
Analytical and creative problems in scenic design under a variety of theatrical conditions

* THEA 3881 Lighting Design II (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 2881)
Analytical and creative problems in lighting design under a variety of theatrical conditions.

* THEA 3882 Costume Design II (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 2882)
Course continues where Costume Design I left off: design for complete shows in addition to a great deal of hands on work. Depending on the needs of the show for that quarter, skills you will learn can include dye and paint techniques, millinery and corsetry.

THEA 3883 Stage Makeup (2 quarter hours)
Hands-on instruction in application and design of theatrical makeup.

THEA 3884 Scene Painting (3 quarter hours)
Exploration of two-and three-dimensional techniques for painting stage scenery.

* THEA 3885 Directing II (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 2885)
Intermediate course that builds upon the foundation of Directing I. This course offers a challenging, hands-on approach to understanding, integrating and demonstrating the skills required for the confident practice of the director's craft.

* THEA 3886 Directing III (3 quarter hours / prerequisite THEA 3885)
Advanced directing course. A full-immersion approach to the director's craft as applied to new and experimental scripts, set in a variety of possible stage configurations, drawing upon skills, techniques and work habits developed through Directing I & II.

THEA 3991 Independent Study (1 - 10 quarter hours)
In-depth exploration of a specific topic or project of the student's choosing, undertaken in consultation with and under the close supervision of a faculty advisor. These courses may also be taken in preparation for an honor's thesis in history, criticism, literature, etc.
