The Mandrake was produced on the University of Denver
Theatre Departments proscenium stage. The proscenium arch
is 24' wide and 14' high. The grid height is 20' and there is
approximately 6' of wing space on both sides.
The Mandrake set was a raked platform twisted about 10
degrees off of the center line. It was painted as an inlaid marble
floor with a wood walkway on both stage left and right. In the
middle of this raked paltform was a small fountain. Pairs of
metal pipe were hung on both left and right and along the upstage
end of the raked platform. The show began with the actors hanging
three old and tattered drops on these pipes and setting up a
statue (a live actor) on the plinth in the fountain. At the end
of the show the drops fell and the ballons were released leaving
the space even more empty than when it began.
