In the fall of 1985 the theatre program at the University of Denver was forced to re-invent itself. One of the first decisions was to move away from a production program that was box-office driven into one that allowed for experimentation with the actor-audience relationship. During the course of the 1985-86 academic year a set of "giraffe cages" (as they were fondly called) were built on the stage of the Margery Reed Hall Little Theatre. These structures slowly turned the proscenium theatre into an arena stage with audience on and under the "cages".

The first show to utilize the newly built balcony structure was Phoenix '85. Phoenix '85 was a compilation of short plays and scenes geared to the ability of every actor who auditioned.

For Phoenix '85 the "giraffe cages" only surrounded the acting space on three sides.
