The What The Butler Saw set consisted of a wall full of three dimensional details. Cracked and long lost plaster over brick. Then modern lighting and alarm cables over that. All apparently recently renovated but not fixed. For this production, surfaces were important and often hid a crumbling and deeply distressed under surface.
The lighting was based on 9 basic lighting areas. Each area was lit 3 instruments. These were gelled with Pale Apricot (R304) and Pale Blue (R63) from the front and Pale Rose Pink (R37) from the rear. The stage was also washed with 18 instruments gelled with the three primary colors.
